2008 – Spitsbergen

This voyage was a big challenge in terms of logistics. The expedition was divided into nine legs, with two of them headed for Spitsbergen. Polonus was five months at sea and a combined 70 participants travelled about 20.000 miles on land and 1,200 miles on Baltic Sea ferries.

Before the start we rebuilt the engine, refitted the electrics and demagnetised the yacht (with help from the Polish Navy). We upgraded the navigational equipment and rounded up the VHF-Radio, EPIRB, GPS-receivers, depth sounder and log with a satellite compass, probably the first on a Polish yacht. Among other things we also acquired a floating portable VHF-radio, survival suits, automatic life vests (for the dinghy-crews), pyrotechnics and a smoothbore rifle (rented out on Spitsbergen).

This expedition was a dream come true. Blue ice, the thunder of calving glaciers, whale tails and their fountains, seals on foes and the glowing hearts of all polar enthusiasts!
